If you are seeking to work in a licensed venue involved in the sale, service and promotional service of alcohol in NSW, it is a Government requirement for you to complete an RSA course that has been approved by Liquor & Gaming.

Legislation requires refresher training every five (5) years. This must be undertaken through Liquor & Gaming before expiry. If you hold a current RSA Competency card you must renew with Liquor and Gaming NSW.
Renewals can be completed online in the 90 days before your current card expires.

Course Aim

The program is designed to give you mandatory skills and knowledge required to sell, serve, or supply alcohol in NSW. On successful completion you will receive an RSA Certificate which can be used to apply for your RSA Competency card. This card will allow you to work in positions where alcohol is served, including:

  • Bar staff
  • Bottle shop attendants
  • Licensees
  • Event staff
  • Function staff
  • Managers
  • Security Officers
  • Cruise ship/airline staff

If you hold a current RSA Competency card you must renew with Liquor and Gaming NSW. Renewals can be completed online in the 90 days before your current card expires.

Included in the course

The course will include information about:

  • Legal requirements related to venues, minors, and signage
  • Assisting customers to drink within the appropriate limits
  • How to assess alcohol affected customers and identify those whose service should be refused
  • When to refuse service of alcohol
  • Standard drinks
  • Harm minimisation strategies and procedures

Students must bring

Students must bring:

  • Photo identification (license or passport)
  • A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI)
  • Pen and paper to make notes and complete assessment activities

Get a USI | Unique Student Identifier

You will be required to read at times complex information, communicate in a way that is easily understandable and calculate age and volume of drinks.  If you need assistance due to your Language, Literacy or Numeracy Skills, please contact us to discuss your support requirements.
